With an area of 69.13 square kilometers, and 14 administrative villages and one residential community under its jurisdiction, Tongyuan has a permanent population of 40,800 or a registered population of 40,600. In 2024, its GDP totaled 3.273 billion yuan, and the output value of the industries above designated size totaled 6.64 billion yuan. Agricultural Economic Development Zone of Haiyan, established in February 2019, operates under integrated administration with Tongyuan Town. The Agricultural Science Park and Hushan Modern Agricultural Park have been included in the provincial-level development list. The town has been recognized as a national base for pollution-free agricultural products, green foods, organic agricultural products and geographical indications of agricultural products, the only rice cultivation base of this kind in Zhejiang.

Tongyuan is one of the first provincial-level “Exemplary Towns for Consolidating Foundation of Revolutionary Legacy”, also the only town of Haiyan; the first CPC Party organization in Haiyan - Pengjiayan Group was established here, marking the start of the revolutionary history of Haiyan. In 2022, Xueshuigang was recognized as the first and excellent provincial-level future-oriented village; in 2023, its harmonious and beautiful rural zone “Comfortable Dwelling, Harmonious Tongyuan” won a municipal-level award; the scenic village Fengyi with lucid waters and lush mountains was included into one of the first provincial-level Gold 3A scenic villages of Zhejiang, ranked first for the fourth consecutive year in the evaluation of 3A-level scenic villages of Jiaxing, and was included in the most beautiful tourist destinations of the Yangtze River Delta. Since 2018, Ttongyuan has been a Model Town of Zhejiang in Constructing Beautiful Countryside, a Beautiful Habitable Model Town of Zhejiang, a Forest Town of Zhejiang, an Intangible Heritage Town of Zhejiang, a Strong Cultural Town of Zhejiang, a Rural Revitalization Model Town of Jiaxing, a Beautiful Water Town of Jiaxing, a Model Ecological Civilization Town of Jiaxing, a Characteristic Tourist Town of Beautiful Countryside of China and a Model Town of Zhejiang for Guarding Revolutionary Roots.
