  • Zhujiamen belongs to Liuli Village, Ganpu Town. Its name originated from the initial settlement of just eighteen families with the family name Zhu (in the name Zhujiamen, “jia” means “family” and “men” means “gate”). From 1912 to 1949, Liuli Weir served as a cargo wharf for Ganpu, and many locals went to Shanghai for fortunes. Teenagers about 15 years old from Zhujiamen were sent to Shanghai, where they were engaged in cotton cloth business, and sauce and pickle business. Through hard work and diligence, they created and accumulated abundant wealth for their families, and some returned to Zhujiamen later and constructed distinctive residential houses blending Suzhou and Huizhou’s architectural styles of the late Qing Dynasty (1436-1911) and the early period of Republic of China (1912-1949) .

Thriving along Liuli Weir, Zhujiamen now is a provincial-level historical and cultural hamlet with numerous residences of the late Qing Dynasty (1436-1911) and the early period of Republic of China (1912-1949). Those residences feature architectural elements like horse head-shaped walls, white walls, black-tiled roofs and double-layered eaves, and are of historical, artistic and research value. The hamlet’s cultural walls and pictures on the old granary walls create a strong artistic atmosphere. In 2014, renowned scholar Jin Gang settled in Zhujiamen, named his residence “Jianghu Residence” and devoted himself to writing 300 Years of the Great Song Dynasty, attracting many famous scholars to visit as well as cultural enterprises to establish their bases here like Baidisanying and Moshanghuakai. Zhujiamen has evolved into a hub integrating tourism, film production and commerce, enriching the ancient hamlet with profound cultural vitality.

In 2016, Ganpu Town launched the “Preservation Project for Historical and Cultural Hamlet of Zhujiamen”, including the relocation of local residents, the restoration of historical buildings and ancient pathways, the construction of public service facilities, and the introduction of cultural resources, to revitalize the hamlet. Adhering to the principle of “restoring the original and unified styles”, this project has repaired historical buildings like Old Residence of the Zhu Family, and old granaries, equipped new public service facilities and created six functional zones for urban displays, and development of humanities and arts.
