  • Recent biodiversity monitoring efforts in Haiyan have yielded significant findings. The investigation team from Nanjing Institute of Environmental Sciences, under the Ministry of Ecology and Environment, has identified four newly recorded species of large fungi around Nanmu Mountain in Ganpu Town, within the Nanbei Lake Scenic Area. They are Collybiopsis clavicystidiata, Psathyrella microsporoides, Collybiopsis vellerea and Psathyrella abieticola. This discovery brings the total number of newly recorded large fungi species in Haiyan to six.

A new species is defined as one that has been discovered and scientifically described for the first time, having not been previously recognized or published. A new record, on the other hand, refers to the identification of a known species in a region where it was not previously recorded.

The newly recorded fungi, such as Collybiopsis clavicystidiata and Collybiopsis vellerea, thrive in diverse environments, including dead branches in coniferous forests and the leaf litter layer of mixed coniferous and broad-leaved forests. These specimens were predominantly collected from areas surrounding Nanbei Lake in Ganpu Town.

“The discovery of these newly recorded fungi in China significantly enhances the biodiversity resources in Haiyan and contributes new entries to the country's fungi species database,” stated an official from Haiyan Branch of Bureau of Ecological Environment of Haiyan. “These fungi will undergo further laboratory research to explore their potential medicinal and edible values,” added the official. The discovery of these species has enriched public understanding of biodiversity and underscores the importance of biodiversity conservation and awareness.

As a result of comprehensive background investigations and the establishment of monitoring networks, a total of 1,761 species have been documented in Haiyan. This includes 594 species of terrestrial higher plants, 10 mammal species, 183 bird species, 11 species of amphibians and reptiles, 549 aquatic species, 214 terrestrial insect species, and 200 species of large fungi. The investigation also recorded six new species in China, 79 new records in Zhejiang Province, and 118 new records in the county.

To date, Haiyan has documented four species of national first-class protected wild animals and plants, 34 species of national second-class protected wild animals and plants, 23 species protected within Zhejiang Province, and 11 threatened species listed in the “China Biodiversity Red List.”
